Take It Outside

By Katie Vaughn

Arguably, summer is the best time of year in Madison, so why not spend an entire day out of doors?

Start with an alfresco workout courtesy of Madison Outdoor Yoga, which offers free classes at rotating parks across the city. Afterward, fuel up at a coffee shop; Ancora Cafe + Bakery, Colectivo Coffee, Barriques and Grace Coffee Co. serve up brews, breakfast and outdoor seating at spots throughout the Madison area.

Next, how about some shopping? Stroll charming Monroe Street, popping into Zip-Dang, Sunne Boutique, Good Day Shop, Hive of Madison, Mystery to Me, Calabash Gifts, Art Gecko, Orange Tree Imports and Artsy Fartsy. When hunger hits, grab a wood-fired pizza and table on the back patio at Pizza Brutta, or a SoCal-inspired meal and spot on the spacious covered patio at Everly.

Time to stretch your legs! Just off Monroe Street, the UW Arboretum’s 1-mile Wingra Oak Savanna Loop is an easy hike that includes a boardwalk at Ho-Nee-Um Pond and views of Lake Wingra, while near the Visitor Center, the Little Curtis Loop, also 1 mile, reveals blooming plants and one of the world’s oldest restored prairies. Post-hike, relax with a cold drink on the shady back patio at Indie Coffee Roasters.

When you’re ready for dinner, head to West Wash, where RED awaits with an expansive front patio and some of the city’s best sushi. Continue your evening at State Line Distillery, enjoying delicious craft cocktails and mocktails and the buzzy energy of the Marquette neighborhood on your choice of two patios. Cap the night with some fun at Breese Stevens Field — soccer games, concerts, bodega nights and more are held outdoors all summer long!
