Before settling down in their newly remodeled home in Madison, a globe-trotting couple wanted to create a beautiful, calm and functional family space for their growing family. They tapped Anna Franklin, founder and creative director of Stone House Collective, to design a tranquil, cozy interior that reflected their past adventures and — with the arrival of a new baby — and adventures yet to come.
To create a warm base, Franklin employed Sherwin-Williams’ Sanctuary, a soft white paint shade, throughout the home. In the living room, she layered in texture by combining different materials.
“We loved the brown leather couch, but two leather couches would have made it feel too cold in this room,” says Franklin. “Instead, I found a velvet couch in a rich brown color to pair with the leather.”
Both were sourced in house from Stone House Collective. The living room is gently framed by two arching floor lamps from Visual Comfort and features artwork by Kader Boly.
“It took us some time to find the perfect statement [art] pieces for our living room,” says the homeowner. “Anna suggested Kader Boly, and we could not be happier with the pieces we selected and how perfectly they work in the space.”
Boly grew up in West Africa and paints on canvas or fabric, using oil paints, pastels and even clay to showcase fantastical depictions of nature. Franklin often displays his art in her shop.
In the sunroom, a creamy linen sofa is adorned with botanical accent pillows from Hackner Home. Covering the floor is a hand-woven wool and jute rug in earthy tones from Jaipur Living’s Harman Natural Collection. Sunlight filters in through rattan shades.
“It was important to choose the right window treatments for this room,” says Franklin. “We decided on a woven blend material made to diffuse sunlight and create a warm, textural feel in the space.”
Franklin notes her favorite places to shop for window treatments are The Shade Store and Hunter Douglas — and she also plans to add window treatments to Stone House Collective’s offerings soon.
The couple wanted the nursery to blend seamlessly with the rest of the home’s serene interior design — conveying a cozy, calm and functional look.
“The clients were looking for a sweet room design for their first daughter that could grow with her age,” says Franklin. “We decided on a twist of natural materials and ditsy fabric prints.”
In the end, Franklin delivered a complete home transformation, combining unique finds, soft textures and a worldly vibe.
“The antique pieces Anna found are some of our favorites,” says the homeowner. “We love the mixture of new and old to create a classic look.”
Meet the Designer
Anna Franklin, founder and creative director of Stone House Collective, carefully curated the details in this home to create a cozy, vintage design for the homeowners.
Here are some of her best tips for flawless home design.
- “We are seeing less black and white requests in home design,” says Franklin. “Many clients are leaning toward rich brown furniture and cream paint colors to create that warm, vintage tone.”
- “I try to achieve a style I call ‘livable luxury’ in my interior design projects,” says Franklin. “Our store features items sourced from around the world that have a vintage, ‘found’ aesthetic many clients are looking for. I also love to shop on Etsy, 1stDibs or Chairish for unique finds.”
- “Unexpected textures create subtle visual interest, like a rattan chandelier,” says Franklin. “Also, combining different materials, like a leather sofa paired with a velvet one, adds softness to a room.”
