Deneen Carmichael
Interviewed and photographed by Ali Stone

Owner of Neena boutique in Middleton, volunteer firefighter and momma

Age: 40

Family: Partner, Luke, daughter, Remy, 9, and son, Tobin, 6 months

Hobbies: Running and, honestly, running my business, responding to fire calls and being with my family. There isn’t time for much else!

Three words that describe your personality: Driven, grateful, loyal

Favorite item in your closet: A black cashmere scoop neck sweater dress that I bought in 1999 and have worn every year since. It is still fabulous, still in great condition and still fits!

Go-to work outfit: Any pair of Henry & Belle denim, black layering tee, 360 Cashmere sweater or cardigan, cashmere or jersey scarf, ankle boots, Just the 2 of Us necklace(s) and earrings.

Go-to day off outfit: Cargo jogger sweatpants, white V-neck tee, R&R Surplus thermal hoodie, slip-on sneaks and a ball cap or a cozy beanie.

Does your daughter share your love of fashion? She certainly does! She has been drawing her own designs in sketchbooks since she was 4 and now loves working at the store after school. She knows instantly what she likes and why and is confident about her own unique sense of style.

We know you’re big on fitness. Do you incorporate your personal style in your workout gear?  Absolutely. Since I tend to dress in mostly black and gray, I love edging up my all-black workout ensembles with details—mesh, texture, layers and unique cuts like open-back or oversized armhole tops with a cool fitness bra underneath. Like most women I know, my workouts are sandwiched between 1,001 other daily activities so wearing fitness attire that looks and feels great is important because I might be wearing it all day!

Your favorite trend right now? I have two: flare jeans and fringe! I think I must be a hippie at heart.

What do you feel naked without? Mascara, lip balm, my favorite sunglasses and a great handbag. I can wear sweats and still feel stylish if I have all of these!

Outfit Details: 360 Cashmere fringe cardigan, $480, Henry & Belle jeans, $178, Yala tee, $66, Just The 2 Of Us necklaces, $148-$150, Marcia Moran earrings, $220; Neena, Alberto Fermani boots, $525; Neiman Marcus.
