Moody Meets Whimsical

When a Madison couple wanted to elevate their home to a their young family and work-from-home needs, they reached out to Kimberlin Payne, founder and designer at K. Payne Interiors.

The homeowners, Bill and Amanda, had an idea of the color palette and overall feel that they wanted, but Payne says she had a lot of freedom to get creative with this project. The deep blue color palette achieved the goal of creating a moodier space, while unique patterns and yellow accents added some whimsy and kept the design from getting too serious.

“A friend of Amanda’s has gifted her a lot of really fun art,” explains Payne, “so we featured a lot of handmade art that is very one-of-a-kind.”

Before the remodel, the homeowners’ work-from-home setup was less than ideal.

“They were both kind of squished into weird spaces.

Amanda was working from a little desk in her bedroom and Bill used the main-level bedroom as his office,” says Payne.

Creating a space for the couple to work in was a primary goal. After converting the extra bedroom into an office space, they were able to include a big L-shaped desk that the couple can both work from comfortably. One end is even positioned opposite a gallery wall so there’s a nice background for virtual meetings.

Payne says the couple “loves to entertain and host book clubs, so they wanted an adult hangout.” To accomplish this, they swathed the living room in a deep blue sisal wallpaper — but made sure to incorporate kid-friendly materials throughout for maximum durability.

One of the biggest logistical challenges, says Payne, was an area in the front of the house with a large window overlooking the road.

“We really wanted to focus the seating area and the social area towards the back of the house and not emphasize the road side,” she says.

But when she styled the space with a blue velvet daybed and vintage record player, no one expected that it would become a favorite spot for everyone in the family.

“Everyone absolutely loves it,” she says. “They’ve been lounging and reading there, and the dog naps there. It’s been a favorite spot for both family and visitors.”

Now, with a space to entertain in that feels both grown-up and inviting, the homeowners, Payne says, “are proud to bring their friends over and share their new space.”
