Inside Pella: Your Dutch-Inspired Getaway

You don’t need to book a flight to the Netherlands for a Dutch escape. Tucked away in the heart of Iowa, forty miles southeast of Des Moines, sits Pella — a small town filled to the brim with historic highlights and charm. Whether visiting loved ones or planning a weekend escape, travelers are welcome to experience Pella’s local favorites steeped in rich heritage and distinct traditions.

There is a reason Pella is known as “America’s Dutch Treasure.” It was first settled by a company of immigrants from the Netherlands in 1847, and the city’s heritage is reflected throughout in its architecture, culinary and cultural experiences. On any given day, guests can admire Dutch-inspired architecture, savor seasonal coffee creations from local cafes and stroll along the colorful blooms and foliage across the town’s parks.

Throughout the year, there are multiple events and community gatherings for guests to enjoy the local culture. Notably, Pella Historical Museums celebrates Wyatt Earp Day each September, honoring the life of one of the most infamous figures of the Old West and his boyhood home in Pella. Featuring crafts, tasty treats and old-fashioned music, this family-friendly festival is memorable for all ages.

Whether drawn by history, architecture or authentic Dutch cuisine, Pella offers something for every traveler to discover.

Going Dutch

Pella’s Dutch identity has been strongly woven into the community for over 200 years, making it nearly impossible for guests to wander the streets without falling in love with its culture. During your visit, see the Vermeer Windmill, the tallest working grain windmill in North America, explore Pella Historical Museums or discover the Molengracht Canal and Klokkenspel Plaza. Enjoy various Dutch dining options at Butcher’s Brewhuis, try the poffertijes at Clover Leaf on Franklin or order a box of Dutch pastries including Dutch letters at Jaarsma or Vander Ploeg Bakery.

Dive Into Lake Life

Visitors can experience an outdoor escape at Lake Red Rock, Iowa’s largest lake, with over 15,000 square acres of surface water. The lake has opportunities for fishing, boating, camping, biking, kayak and paddleboard rentals, as well as numerous trails for hikers. The 17-mile Volksweg Trail runs along the Des Moines River and winds through the scenic North Overlook woodland back into Pella. Along the path, hikers will find the Cordova Observation Tower, standing at 106 feet tall, which offers breathtaking views of the woods and lakeside.
