GREENBUSH BAKERY

Marv “Donutman” and Barb Miller took over a failing donut shop on Regent Street in 1996 and turned it into a hometown favorite. The kosher bakery offers both cake and yeast- raised donuts daily. The company uses a special sour cream batter for its popular old-fashioned donut, which comes in five flavors: sour cream, blueberry, cherry, chocolate and apple cinnamon. Many other donut options abound daily, including crullers, filled and cake donuts, glazed rings and more. The large apple fritters are legendary here. Check out their second location on the far east side. greenbushbakery.com

DUCK DONUTS

The Pennsylvania-based chain boasts that your order is “customized before your eyes.” Duck Donuts makes vanilla cake donuts and serves them warm. You then choose a coating (sugar, glaze, flavored icings), a topping (sprinkles, crumbs, nuts and even bacon) and a drizzle or icing. Or select from seasonal and featured varieties or pre-selected assortments. Order online if you prefer. duckdonuts.com

LEVEL 5 DONUTS

Wife-and-husband team Caitlin Rockey and Aaron Mooney started this all-vegan donut operation as a pop-up — and they’ll continue forging ahead until they find a brick- and-mortar space. Meanwhile you can order customized boxes with 48 hours’ notice for pickup at Ledger Coffee Roasters. Flavors range from chocolate and vanilla to churro and chai, and all but the Boston Dream and cinnamon roll are gluten-free. Also find their donuts at Broken Board Coffee, Forward Craft & Coffee, Johnson Public House, Mother Fool’s Coffeehouse and several other locations. level5donuts.com

ZIPPY LUBE

This former automotive shop switched from motor to fry oil and offers fried chicken after 11 a.m., but you can find fresh cake donuts here starting at 7 a.m. Drool over glazed, powdered and “super premium” donuts with ganache or cream fillings. Breakfast sammies are also on the menu if you crave a savory bite. Top it off with a coffee or espresso. zippylubemadison.com

BLOOM BAKE SHOP

Among this Monroe Street bakery’s many offerings is its sweet potato doughnut (spelled the traditional way on the menu), and vegan and gluten- free donuts as well. Daily selections are also delivered to its Eken Park location at Northstreet, which shares a space with Café Domestique and Young Blood Beer Company. bloombakeshop.com

GLAZED

Located inside the Global Market & Food Hall, this family operation offers mochi donuts. Resembling a ring of donut holes, the treat is made with glutinous rice flour and tapioca starch so you get a light crunch from the exterior and a surprisingly chewy interior. Flavors vary weekly and are posted on the Facebook page. glazedmadison.com

FOSDAL HOME BAKERY

In 1939, Olav and Mildred Fosdal purchased Home Bakery on Main Street in Stoughton and added their surname. Their son took over in 1976. And, since 2005, longtime employee Joe Crubaugh has been at the helm. While it makes breads, pastries and buns with a Norwegian flair, the bakery is also known for its donuts — especially its chocolate donut — made with raised chocolate dough and chocolate icing. fosdalhomebakery.net
