She wasn’t looking for another vacation. As a working mother, her days were filled with meetings, schedules, responsibilities and the constant pull of being needed by someone. She found it along the waterways, trails and small towns of West Central Michigan.
One Saturday began in Evart, where the family launched their kayaks into the Muskegon River and spent the day floating toward Paris. The pace was slower there. Conversations came easier. Phones stayed tucked away. For a few hours, there was nowhere else they needed to be.
Another weekend led them to Big Rapids. A walk along the Riverwalk turned into shopping downtown, stopping for ice cream and lingering longer than planned. On another visit, they explored the Dragon Trail, discovering that some of the best family memories are made when everyone is simply outside together. Then there was Idlewild. Walking through a community rich with history and resilience reminded them that every place has a story worth telling. It wasn’t just a stop on the map, it was an opportunity to learn, reflect, and connect.
What surprised her most wasn’t the places themselves, it was how they made her family feel. Connected. Relaxed. Present.
The region became more than a destination. It became their third place, place where traditions began, memories were made and everyone felt they belonged.
