GET THE LOOK
When pulling together her mood board (pictured above), Nest Interior Design’s Fulton was inspired by a recent kitchen/dining space she concepted for a client who needed more room for gatherings. She explains that the use of neutrals, along with strategic splashes of blue in the backsplash, wall color and throw pillows, guarantees the space has longevity — but can be changed down the road.

EXPERT OPINION
Fulton explains what makes a space really look polished.
Color Cues
“I’m happy to see a mix of warm and cool woods. Embracing warm and cool neutrals (instead of everything being so cool the last few years) … gives spaces longevity. And because our winters are so long in Wisconsin, it’s nice to have warmer tones to visually warm up a space as well.”
Mix It Up
“A kitchen that’s going to stand the test of time has a healthy mix of textures. Using all matte textures (such as honed countertops, matte cabinetry and scrubbed oak floors) can look flat. Weaving in polished metals or countertops can really lift a space.”
Luxe Lighting
“Lighting is so important! If everything is light and you’ve got good task lighting, that is a space you’re going to want to be in and love for the long term. With lighting, we do a mix of under-cabinet lighting, general lighting and pendant lights.”
