LESLEY NUMBERS’ PRINTS FORGE CONNECTIONS
DESIGN AND ILLUSTRATIONS ARE a sounding board for screen printer and Patchwork Print shop owner Lesley Anne Numbers. “I strive to create art that inspires conversation or self-reflection or makes someone feel less alone,” she says, “There are so many problems to address— institutionalized racism, environmental degradation, gender inequalities, etc.—I only hope my prints can show support for and add a voice to the collective call for transformation.”
Numbers’ prints incorporate bright colors, whimsical patterns and simple forms in folk art and mid-century design, a reflection of her interest in the historical significance and symbolism of plants and animals and the focused, meditative daily sketches that have become part of her creative process. “I love that screen printing is a versatile and accessible art form. I can print on fabric, paper and wood; the prints can be decorative or functional, and because there are multiples of one image, the artwork is more affordable. I value the human element and physical energy that goes into each print—the slight imperfections and layers of colors that distinguish screen prints from digital prints.”
