Mar. 8 | CODAFest | Vincent Davis Quartet

March 8 @ 5:00 pm - 8:30 pm

Vincent Davis, born in Chicago is an internationally acclaimed jazz percussionist, composer and teacher. The seed of music was planted in Davis early, growing up in a home filled with the influences of rock, jazz and gospel. In 1979 Davis left Chicago to attend the Milwaukee Conservatory of Music, where his love of jazz and skill at drumming further bloomed and flourished. It was here that Davis met his mentor Manty Ellis. Davis trained and studied with Ellis, primarily focusing on Jazz trap drumming.

Owen Frankel – bass
Owen Frankel is a bassist and composer originally from the Chicago area. Owen studied Jazz Bass at Oberlin Conservatory under Gerald Cannon and Peter Dominguez. Focusing on improvised and creative music Owen writes and performs compositions for instrumental groups, as well as more vocally oriented ensembles. Owen will be moving to Chicago this fall and looks forward to his future in composing and performing genre bending pieces in many different musical environments.

Ben Schmidt Swartz – Sax
A born and bred Chicago tenor player, Ben is happy to be on the scene in Chicago. Ben has had a prolific carreer as a saxophonist, woodwindist, composer and educator. Whether the style is avant-garde or bebop he feels at home in any musical situation, and strives to find new ways of creating alchemy within different genres and disciplines

Preyas Roy – Vibes
Roy, who was born in Syracuse, New York, started playing the mallets when he was about 11. Though he has been playing ever since, he has not always been what he is today: a full-time, professional musician. “I came to Chicago to study math at the University of Chicago,” Roy said, “and I started playing music around town maybe eight or nine years ago. Eventually, I left school — because I wanted to be a musician.” Roy found his people on the jazz circuit and connected with a mentor: celebrated Chicago jazz violinist Sam “Savoirfaire” Williams. But Roy quickly felt the harsh realities of trying to make a living as a musician, even in a big city like Chicago.
