SUMMARY:Nature Passport Season
DESCRIPTION:It’s officially Nature Passport season! \nMadison\, WI – This year\, Nature Net is revamping its renowned Nature Passport to make the most of your summer outdoor adventures! Whether you’re discovering hidden gems or completing simple missions\, the updated Nature Passport ensures that you make the most of all that these incredible locations have to offer! Nature Net is also a proud supporter of the Nature Everywhere Initiative—so whether you’re visiting a Nature Net site or exploring your local park\, be sure to get outside and connect with the nature around you! \nThe Nature Passport is a free and self-guided activity journal inviting children and their families to visit the various Nature Net sites and spend time engaging with the natural world. Each site has a list of activities for kids to complete along with further information about the location. Families may work to complete as many of the nature missions as they can\, or they may simply use their Passport as inspiration for their own adventures. Offered in both English and Spanish\, Nature Passports are available at Nature Net sites and local libraries from now to the end of summer. Each site has something truly unique to explore\, so what are you waiting for? Get out there and explore! \nWith a mix of indoor attractions like the Madison Children’s Museum and Cave of the Mounds\, and stunning outdoor spots such as Cherokee Marsh and the UW–Madison Arboretum\, there’s always somewhere to explore no matter the weather! Nature Net Director\, Betsy Parker\, notes that\, “the Nature Passport has always been one of my favorite programs we offer. It can be hard for families to stay creative with activities throughout the summer\, so I love that we can provide a pocket-sized tool that inspires adventure and connects people with our local natural and cultural resources.” \nNature Net is a program of the Aldo Leopold Nature Center and works to get families and educators outdoors. This year’s Nature Passport is offered as a free resource thanks to support from Wild Birds Unlimited and printing via Images Plus. Additionally\, the UW-Madison Latin American\, Caribbean\, and Iberian Studies Program (LACIS) assisted in creating the Spanish language version of the Passport. If you would like to get more involved and keep the Nature Passport going for the next generation of environmental stewards\, donations are accepted at naturenet.org.

SUMMARY:History Sandwiched In Summer 2025
DESCRIPTION:Wish there was a way to get a crash-course on the most unique aspects of Wisconsin history in one place? Look no further than History Sandwiched In\, where scholars\, historians\, authors and community members from across the state join together to hold engaging discussions on wide-ranging historical topics of interest. From the hidden history of prominent Wisconsin idols\, heroes and icons to the lives of Wisconsin World War II infantrymen and more\, learn about the people\, places and stories that shaped—and continue to shape—the Badger State. \nJune 10 – BJ Hollars presents “The Wit and Wisdom of JFK”\nWhile President Kennedy is well-known for his political feats\, less is known of his wit and wisdom\, both of which contributed to his campaign style throughout the 1960 Wisconsin primary. The campaign was filled with folly\, from mistaken identity to stand-up jokes\, car trouble to Jackie Kennedy posing with hams. Wisconsin provided Kennedy plenty of opportunities to transform mishaps into humor\, and in doing so\, he found the wisdom of laughing at oneself and winning over Wisconsin voters in the process. Learn of Kennedy’s comedic style\, and how he harnessed humor for political power—in Madison and beyond. \nJune 24 – Dean Robbins presents “Wisconsin Idols: 100 Heroes Who Changed the State\, the World\, and Me”\nWho were the heroes\, idols and icons who changed Wisconsin forever? Author and award-winning journalist Dean Robbins chronicles the people who visited\, grew up in or transformed the Badger State in important ways—from Joshua Glover’s miraculous escape from enslavers in Racine to the fearless feats of legendary Packers quarterback Bart Starr\, Robbins ties together narratives both poignant and historic to paint a picture that irrefutably establishes Wisconsin as a crossroads for extraordinary people who changed the world. Robbins’ presentation will be based on insights collected from his book\, Wisconsin Idols: 100 Heroes Who Changed the State\, the World\, and Me. \nJuly 8 – Mark D. Van Ells presents “Red Arrow across the Pacific: The Thirty-Second Infantry Division during World War II”\nPulling from his book of the same name\, Mark D. Van Ells recounts the crucial role members of one Midwest National Guard unit played in supporting the Allies in the Pacific. During a gripping and thoughtful presentation\, Ells will tell the story of how the “Red Arrow Division” rose from humble origins to become one of the most effective—and most battle-tested—US combat units in WWII. \nJuly 22 – James Lattice & Kelly Tyrrell present “Chasing the Stars: Washburn Observatory in Science and Culture\nBased on extracts from their recent book Chasing the Stars: How the Astronomers of Observatory Hill Transformed Our Understanding of the Universe\, James Lattice and Kelly Tyrrell will discuss the origins of the Observatory\, how our state’s astronomers – through their curiosity\, persistence\, and innovation – have helped us better understand our universe\, and how Wisconsin astronomy has not just contributed to the world of science but also reflected and shaped the culture of the UW-Madison campus and the larger Wisconsin community. \nAugust 19 – Dana Kelly presents “From Fjords to Fields: The Norwegian-American Legacy in Wisconsin”\nWisconsin was shaped by many cultures converging over its long history. Join Dana Kelly\, Executive Director of the Norwegian American Genealogical Center (Madison\, WI) to learn about some of this history and the contributions made by Norwegian-Americans starting with the first Norwegian immigrants arriving in the late 1830s and the 1840s. From forming communities to the accomplishments of individuals to helping shape our state’s culture\, discover how Norwegian-Americans have left their mark on Wisconsin. \nSee event website for more detailed information!

SUMMARY:Madison’s LGBTQ+ History Walking Tour
DESCRIPTION:Stride with pride through the streets where Madison’s LGBTQ+ history was written! From outdoor spaces and bars to the halls of power\, discover the impressive\, everyday\, and unusual spaces where our capital city became a center of activism and advocacy. \nWalk in the footsteps of groundbreaking leaders and citizens who shattered barriers—electing some of America’s first openly queer officials and championing landmark anti-discrimination laws along the way. On select dates—including four tours during Pride Month—join us to explore the gathering spots\, protest sites\, and celebration spaces that transformed Madison into a force for LGBTQ+ spirit. \nAlthough the tour is based out of the Wisconsin History Society (WHS) History Maker Space\, this tour will be taking place within the community and will be visiting multiple locations. The starting location of the tour is 150 S. Blair Street. The tour ends on the Capitol Square (the corner of W. Mifflin Street and N. Carroll Street)\, and looking towards State Street. Upon arrival at the starting location\, please check-in with a WHS staff member to confirm your tour reservation. The guided tour is approximately 1 mile in length and covers paved\, but hilly terrain. Comfortable shoes for walking are strongly recommended. Tour participants are encouraged to bring water\, sunglasses\, and a hat with them as the tour will be taking place entirely outdoors and shade will vary. Walking tours will happen rain or shine. In the case of inclement weather\, consider bringing an umbrella.
