Interested in bugs? Spend an afternoon counting all the insects at a local park. Teaching a unit on plants? Take your class to count all the flowering species you can find in a nearby meadow. Feeling ambitious? Organize your community to count every species you can find during the Wisconsin Science Festival. A BioBlitz can take place in a park\, a school\, an urban lot or your backyard. The possibilities are endless! BioBlitzes are a way to bring the community together to celebrate biodiversity while experiencing the wonder of nature in all of its fabulous niches. \nYour Mission \nDuring the Wisconsin Science Festival Bioblitz\, join with people from all across the state from sunrise on the first day of the Festival until sunset on the last day. SUMMARY:Finding Your Place in Science: A reflective writing workshop on belonging\, identity\, and scientific paths
DESCRIPTION:A scientific identity – essentially\, whether a person feels they belong in the world of science —is associated with longevity and success in STEM-related fields. But what does it mean to belong in science? Does it matter if you identify as a science person? \nAs part of the Wisconsin Science Festival\, the Wisconsin Institute for Discovery (WID) is offering a writing workshop focused on scientific identity\, aimed at undergrad and graduate students\, but also open to the public. We’ll discuss some of the components researchers have identified as part of this sense of belonging in science; consider some of the conscious and unconscious assumptions we might have about who belongs in science; and expand our definitions and explore how varied a scientific identity can be. With a mix of discussion in small and large groups and impromptu writing\, we’ll investigate the broad concept of an identity and how it can be useful in the face of obstacles. Finally\, we’ll consider the more specific idea of belonging in the scientific realm\, what helps you find that sense of belonging and what might prevent it. \nThis workshop is not solely for people who already feel they belong–plenty of people study and work in science without being certain if they do–but for anyone who is interested in using writing and discussion to consider and clarify what this concept of scientific identity means to you. \nThis workshop is led by the Illuminating Discovery Hub’s Writer-in-Residence\, Michelle Wildgen.

DESCRIPTION:Beneath the neatly kept streets of Wisconsin’s capital\, secrets and stories abound—go beyond the well-known facts\, figures\, spaces and places of Madison to learn about odd characters\, mysterious happenings and macabre events. From hauntings and hijinks to magic and even murder\, From Myth to Mystery takes tour-goers on a strange ride through Madison’s lesser-known past. Stops along the way include local hauntings\, the sites of stunts performed by famed magician Harry Houdini\, the remains of Jeffrey Dahmer\, a rumored mythical lake monster and much more. \nCOST \nAdult: $20\nTeen: $20\nSenior: $20\nChild (5-12): $20\nChildren under 5: Free \nAdvanced registration is required \nSociety members receive a 10% discount\, please verify your membership where prompted to receive discount at check out. \nKnow Before You Go & Accessibility \nThis tour includes content that may not be suitable for participants under the age of 16. Please contact Jenny Pederson at jennifer.pederson@wisconsinhistory.org or (608) 669-5160 with any questions or for further information. \nThe tour will start in front of the U.S. Bank Plaza building\, located at 1 S. Pinckney St.\, Madison\, WI 53703. The end of the tour will return to the U.S. Bank Plaza Building. \nFrom start to finish\, the tour loop covers approximately 1.4 miles\, The tour route is paved but does include some hilly terrain. Bring appropriate walking attire. Wearing comfortable shoes are strongly recommended. \nAfter arriving at the starting location and prior to the start of the tour\, check-in with a WHS staff member to confirm your tour reservation. \nTour participants are encouraged to bring water with them as the tour will be taking place outdoors and shade will vary. \nWalking tours will happen rain or shine. In the case of inclement weather\, consider bringing an umbrella. \nThere are public parking options available in downtown Madison. There is a public parking garage\, Capitol Square North Garage\, located within two blocks of the tour’s starting location. Thaller\, in conversation with Eric Wilcots\, Dean of the College of Letters & Sciences and Professor in the Dept of Astronomy\, will talk about the OSIRIS-REx mission – an audacious project to return a sample from an asteroid. No problem\, right? Just chase down a small rock 200 million miles away\, traveling literally faster than a speeding bullet\, vacuum up a sample of its surface\, and shoot it back to Earth. The story turned out to be more difficult\, dramatic\, and rewarding than anyone expected. Join us to find out why we went to so much trouble to bring back an ancient sample of our solar system and what was waiting inside that absolutely blew our minds.

SUMMARY:Oakwood Chamber Players Fall Concert: Musical Mystique
DESCRIPTION:The Oakwood Chamber Players usher in a hint of mystery and macabre with performances at Oakwood Villages Prairie Ridge (5565 Tancho Drive) on Friday\, October 24\, and University Woods (6205 Mineral Point Road) on Saturday\, October 25\, both at 7 p.m.\, followed by a 2 p.m. matinee at Arts + Literature Laboratory on Sunday\, October 26 (111 South Livingston Street). \nThe ensemble’s swath of strings\, winds\, and piano will present an array of impish and dramatic musical delights\, linked together by the spirited and mischievous “Polka” by Alfred Schnittke (1934-1998). Piano Quartet in A minor by Gustav Mahler (1860-1911)\, a profound early work left unfinished\, included musical sketches that Schnittke attempted to complete and quoted in his own later work. Fellow Russian Dmitri Shostakovich (1906-1975)\, one of Schnittke’s primary musical influences\, wrote his powerfully moving String Quartet No. 3 amidst the climate of Stalinist cultural oppression. \nTwo living composers add further dimension to the lineup of 20th century heavy hitters\, Korine Fujiwara (“Artfully layered and knitted together…\,” The Wall Street Journal) and GRAMMY nominee Miguel del Aguila (“Vivacious rhythmic…inspired musicianship…\,” Latino Magazine\, Washington DC). Del Aguila’s “Tango Trio” taps into the Argentine-Uruguayan tango and Brazilian samba\, while Fujiwara’s “Out of the Depths” draws inspiration from sacred music of the Renaissance and Baroque periods. \nOakwood Chamber Players serve as the professional resident ensemble for the Oakwood Village senior living community. Artistic Directors Valree Casey (oboe/English horn)\, Amanda Szczys (bassoon)\, Marie Pauls (viola)\, Maggie Townsend (cello)\, and new associate member Stacy Regehr (piano) will be joined by guest violinists Leanne Kelso and Holly Wagner. \nTickets are $25 general admission\, $20 seniors\, and $5 for students.
