Interested in bugs? Spend an afternoon counting all the insects at a local park. Teaching a unit on plants? Take your class to count all the flowering species you can find in a nearby meadow. Feeling ambitious? Organize your community to count every species you can find during the Wisconsin Science Festival. A BioBlitz can take place in a park\, a school\, an urban lot or your backyard. The possibilities are endless! Hear historic tales of backroom deals\, gambling dens\, daring heists\, holdups and cold-blooded murders as you walk the downtown streets where these misdeeds unfolded. \nNote that this walking tour explores mature themes and is recommended for ages 13 and up. Pinckney Street) and facing the Wisconsin State Capitol building. \nWe recommend arriving at the starting location at least 15 minutes prior to the tour start time. Upon arrival\, please check in with a WHS staff member to confirm your tour reservation. \nThe guided tour is approximately 1.3 mile in length and covers some paved but hilly terrain. \nComfortable shoes for walking are strongly recommended. Tour participants are encouraged to bring water\, sunglasses\, and a hat with them. With the tour taking place outside\, shade will vary. \nWalking tours will happen rain or shine. In the case of inclement weather\, consider bringing an umbrella. \nParking:\nFor Thursday tour dates\, it is strongly recommended not to park in the underground onsite garage at the U.S. Bank Plaza Building. The U.S. Bank Plaza parking garage closes after 6 p.m. on weekdays and will not reopen until Friday morning when regular business hours at the U.S. Bank Plaza building resume. \nRegarding Saturday tour times\, the underground onsite garage at the U.S. Bank Plaza building is not open. \nAs an alternative to parking onsite at the U.S. Bank building\, there are public parking options available in downtown Madison. There is a public parking garage\, Capitol Square North Garage (218 E. Mifflin St.\, Madison\, WI 53703)\, located about two blocks and a 6-minute walk from the tour’s starting location and end location. SUMMARY:Finding Your Place in Science: A reflective writing workshop on belonging\, identity\, and scientific paths
DESCRIPTION:A scientific identity – essentially\, whether a person feels they belong in the world of science —is associated with longevity and success in STEM-related fields. But what does it mean to belong in science? Does it matter if you identify as a science person? \nAs part of the Wisconsin Science Festival\, the Wisconsin Institute for Discovery (WID) is offering a writing workshop focused on scientific identity\, aimed at undergrad and graduate students\, but also open to the public. We’ll discuss some of the components researchers have identified as part of this sense of belonging in science; consider some of the conscious and unconscious assumptions we might have about who belongs in science; and expand our definitions and explore how varied a scientific identity can be. With a mix of discussion in small and large groups and impromptu writing\, we’ll investigate the broad concept of an identity and how it can be useful in the face of obstacles. Finally\, we’ll consider the more specific idea of belonging in the scientific realm\, what helps you find that sense of belonging and what might prevent it. \nThis workshop is not solely for people who already feel they belong–plenty of people study and work in science without being certain if they do–but for anyone who is interested in using writing and discussion to consider and clarify what this concept of scientific identity means to you. \nThis workshop is led by the Illuminating Discovery Hub’s Writer-in-Residence\, Michelle Wildgen.

This engaging evening features scientists Tyler Blum\, Annie Bauer\, and Emily Mixon\, who have been studying the Earth’s oldest rocks – Acasta Gneiss (that’s pronounced “nice”) – and collaborating with local textile artist\, Leah Evans\, to bring 4-billion-year-old stories to life. \nIn conversation with UW-Madison Geology Museum Associate Director\, Brooke Norsted\, learn how these researchers and artist have explored deep time\, planetary processes\, and creative interpretation. Be among the first to experience the unveiling of Leah’s final artwork – an awe-inspiring textile piece created for the Geology Museum. Learn how curiosity\, conversation\, and collaboration turned billion-year-old rocks into an artistic and scientific celebration of deep time and deeper connections. \nThis event will take place in the DeLuca Forum in the UW-Madison Discovery Building. \nRegistration requested.
