SUMMARY:Skating Between Worlds: A Jewish Olympian’s Journey
DESCRIPTION:Go beyond the podium with medal-winning Olympic speed skater Emery Lehman as he shares the story behind the speed. \nIn this personal program\, Lehman reflects on the dedication and resilience required to compete at the highest level\, while navigating the many layers of his Jewish identity. Through moments of triumph\, challenge\, and self-discovery\, he explores how heritage\, athletics\, and personal values shape who we are. \nConnected to the themes of 48 Jews: Layers of Identity\, this talk invites us to consider how identity is expressed\, perceived\, and carried—on the ice and in everyday life. \nStay for a Q&A with Emery Lehman and continue the conversation. \nEVENT DETAILS\nDATE: Sunday\, June 7\, 2026\nTIME: 6:00 – 7:15 p.m.\nLOCATION: Jewish Museum Milwaukee (1360 N. Prospect Avenue)\nCOST: $15 for members and students with a valid ID | $25 non-members \nABOUT THE PRESENTER\nEmery Lehman grew up in a suburb outside Chicago and began speed skating at nine years old as a way to become a better skater for hockey. Lehman stayed active in many sports throughout high school\, including being a standout in both lacrosse and hockey while excelling in speedskating as a junior world champion in the 5\,000m. \nAt age 17\, Lehman competed in his first Olympic Winter Games Sochi 2014. Lehman became the youngest male U.S. speedskater to make his Olympic debut in history\, besting a record previously set by American speedskating legend Eric Heiden at the Olympic Winter Games Innsbruck 1976 by two days. \nLehman would make the U.S. speedskating team for the next two Winter Olympics\, winning bronze in team pursuit at the Olympic Winter Games Beijing 2022. \nHe won his first world title in team pursuit at the 2025 ISU World Speedskating Championships\, and Lehman and his teammates would set the world record later that year in that event at an ISU World Cup stop in Salt Lake City. \nOff the ice\, Lehman graduated from Marquette University with a degree in civil engineering and received his master’s degree in structural engineering from Johns Hopkins University. \nSponsored by the Steve Solochek Memorial Fund. \nThis event is free with museum admission.

SUMMARY:Public Town Hall: The future of our wild Roadless forests
DESCRIPTION:25 years ago\, the US Forest Service held more than 600 public meetings in the process to create the Roadless Rule\, one of the most important conservation measures in history – and it could soon be repealed. The Forest Service’s process to repeal may not include a single public meeting – so our community is hosting our own. Join us to speak up for your national forests. \nThe event’s program will begin promptly at 6:30 with an introductory program that will provide background information about the history of the Roadless Rule. After\, the mic will open for public to make comments. These will be recorded\, transcribed\, and uploaded as written comments on the Draft Environmental Impact Statement for the repeal of the Roadless Rule. Because the US Forest Service has indicated that they will not be hosting public hearings on this change\, we are hosting our own to help people share their thoughts with the Forest Service! \nSeats for this event are limited\, so please register in advance. \nEvent Hosts: Sierra Club – Wisconsin\, Wisconsin’s Green Fire\, Wisconsin Wildlife Federation\, Environmental Law and Policy Center\, League of Women Voters of the Northwoods\nSpecial guest: Mike Dombeck\, who led the rulemaking process for the roadless rule as chief of the U.S. Forest Service. \nBonus event!\nCan’t get enough of the Northwoods? Prior to this town hall\, Sierra Club – Wisconsin will be hosting a hike and providing boxed dinners for attendees who plan to also attend the Roadless Rule Town Hall. SUMMARY:Cookies & Conversation: Israeli Identity Beyond the Headlines
DESCRIPTION:Presented in connection with 48 Jews: Layers of Identity\, join Milwaukee Jewish Federation’s Israel Center Shlicha\, Noa Gerassi\, for an intimate and thought-provoking conversation on belonging\, culture\, and becoming. \nGrounded in the exhibition’s exploration of how identity is shaped\, expressed\, and understood\, Noa will share her personal journey of navigating life as a woman\, a Jew\, and an Israeli. Through storytelling and reflection\, she will explore the people\, places\, and pivotal moments that have influenced her sense of self\, as well as the complexities of holding multiple identities at once. \nNoa will also speak about her decision to serve as a shlicha (Israeli emissary) in Milwaukee—what drew her to this role\, how living and working within a different community has deepened her perspective\, and the ways this experience continues to shape her evolving identity. \nThis program invites participants to reflect on their own layered identities while engaging with the broader themes of 48 Jews: Layers of Identity: that identity is not fixed\, but continually formed through experience\, relationship\, and reflection. \nBorn in Tiberias\, Noa Gerassi spent most of her childhood in Ofra\, a small Orthodox-Zionist community in northern Jerusalem. She spent seven summers at Camp Ramah in upstate New York as a Shlicha. \nNoa has a degree in education and a teacher certificate from Kibbutzim College in Tel Aviv. Her master’s degree is in Jewish studies from Schechter Institute in Jerusalem. Before coming to Milwaukee as schlicha\, Noa worked as a high school history and citizenship studies teacher and then for the Ministry of Education as an Educational Coordinator\, guiding educational staff working with at-risk youth. \nNoa and her husband\, Liran\, have two daughters\, Rona and Lihi and their dog Chika. In June they will return home to Israel. \nIn partnership with Milwaukee Jewish Federation’s Israel Center. \nKosher cookies and coffee will be provided for attendees. Feel free to bring your lunch to nosh. \nLOCATION: Jewish Museum Milwaukee\nCOST: Free with Museum Admission
