Fellow Russian Dmitri Shostakovich (1906-1975)\, one of Schnittke’s primary musical influences\, wrote his powerfully moving String Quartet No. 3 amidst the climate of Stalinist cultural oppression. \nTwo living composers add further dimension to the lineup of 20th century heavy hitters\, Korine Fujiwara (“Artfully layered and knitted together…\,” The Wall Street Journal) and GRAMMY nominee Miguel del Aguila (“Vivacious rhythmic…inspired musicianship…\,” Latino Magazine\, Washington DC). DESCRIPTION:Join the Wisconsin Chamber Choir for a holiday concert featuring beloved carols from around the world\, representing European\, Latin American\, Native American\, and African American traditions. The centerpiece of the program is Carols and Lullabies: Christmas in the Southwest by American composer Conrad Susa\, a cycle of ten carols sung in Spanish and Catalan. Guest musicians on harp\, guitar\, and marimba join the choir and soloists to evoke “a Southwestern piñata party for the new baby\,” in the composer’s description. \nBoth the Southwestern carols and the remaining works on the program reflect the varied ethnic heritages of Wisconsin residents\, past and present. Historical and contemporary composers from England\, France\, Germany\, Ireland\, Italy\, Norway\, Mexico\, Poland\, and the US and Canada represent multiple waves of immigration to Wisconsin. \nSome of North America’s original inhabitants speak through a pair of unique works. Xicochi conetzintle is an early 17th-century villancico with lyrics in Nahuatl\, the main indigenous language of central Mexico. Wyandot’s Realm is a contemporary reinterpretation of the 17th-century Huron Carol by Indigenous Canadian composer Andrew Balfour\, sung in Wendat\, Ojibwe\, and Latin. \nMusic from the African diaspora includes a moving rendition of Silent Night by Detroit-based gospel singer/songwriter Thomas Whitfield; a powerful setting of Longfellow’s poem\, Christmas Bells\, by British composer Roderick Williams; and the joyful concluding “Alleluia” from Ballad of the Brown King by Margaret Bonds with lyrics by Langston Hughes. \nTickets are $25 for adults / $5 students\, available in advance from www.wisconsinchamberchoir.org or at the door. DESCRIPTION:Start your new year off on a high note with Oakwood\, as they kick off 2026 with a refreshing\, globally-inspired music series! Family-friendly performances will take place at Oakwood Villages Prairie Ridge (5565 Tancho Drive) on Friday\, January 16\, and University Woods (6205 Mineral Point Road) on Saturday\, January 17\, both at 7 p.m.\, followed by a 2 p.m. matinee at Arts + Literature Laboratory on Sunday\, January 18 (111 South Livingston Street). \nExperience a multicultural palette of music with touchpoints in each hemisphere. Latin GRAMMY winning composer Gabriela Lena Frank (b. 1972) transforms the classical string quartet into an indigenous ensemble\, imitating Peruvian percussion and panpipes in “Leyendas: An Andean Walkabout.” Hear our solo wind instruments soar over a lush bed of strings with Alexander Glazunov’s (1865-1936) “Rêverie Orientale for Clarinet Quintet\,” a work blending the Russian Romanticism with Eastern harmonies\, and Ralph Vaughan Williams’ (1872-1958) “Six Studies in English Folk Song.” “Scène Champêtre” by Gabriel Allier (1863-1924) sweeps us into the French countryside\, showcasing a charming trio of winds. \nOakwood Chamber Players serve as the professional resident ensemble for the Oakwood Village senior living community. Artistic Directors Valree Casey (oboe/English horn)\, Nancy Mackenzie (clarinet)\, Amanda Szczys (bassoon)\, Marie Pauls (viola)\, and Maggie Townsend (cello) will be joined by guest violinists Isabella Lippi and Peter Miliczky. \nTickets are $25 general admission\, $20 seniors\, and $5 for students. DESCRIPTION:We’re excited to announce that members of the Madison Männerchor will be singing German drinking songs for Beer Church\, and we hope to make it a monthly event moving forward.\nThese guys know German drinking songs like the back of their hands\, an d I they love drinking beer while singing–perfect for our taproom!\nFounded in 1852\, the Madison Männerchor is the second oldest German singing organization in the United States\, and the oldest in Wisconsin. Their goal is the perpetuation of choral music\, both German and American\, German Culture\, and Gemuetlichkeit.\nCome one\, come all. Singing and drinking beer is what beer church is all about.
