SUMMARY:Madison Bach Musicians presents "Princely Architects"
DESCRIPTION:A fusion of music and architecture! Legendary architect Frank Lloyd Wright\, Wisconsin’s own\, loved the music of Beethoven and Bach and sought to emulate their compositions in his own designs. Madison Bach Musicians is honored to be part of the First Unitarian Society’s official celebration of the 75th anniversary of Wright’s 1951 architectural masterpiece — Unitarian Meeting House — by performing works of Beethoven and Bach in that very space. As Wright said\, “Beethoven\, and Bach too\, were princely architects in my spiritual realm….[M]usic is a kind of sublimated mathematics. So is architecture….They require very much the same mind.” MBM Artistic Director Trevor Stephenson’s pre-concert lecture will draw parallels between Wright’s designs and the compositions featured in the concert program: \n• J. S. Bach: Sonata for Violin and Continuo; French Suite No. 6 in E major for Harpsichord; Prelude & Allemande from Cello Suite No. 3 in C major; and Contrapunctus I & IX from The Art of Fugue\n• Ludwig van Beethoven: Allegro con brio from String Quartet in F minor\, Op. 95 (“Serioso”); and Piano Trio in E-flat major\, Op. 1 No. 1 \nSeating in the Meeting House is limited. We suggest purchasing your tickets in advance. Purchase in-person and/or on-demand tickets at https://madisonbachmusicians.org/princely-architects/

SUMMARY:Wisconsin Chamber Choir’s Spring Concert “Time Pieces”
DESCRIPTION:Join the Wisconsin Chamber Choir for a concert of music about time in its many facets. Our program samples a broad range of poetic and musical interpretations of time\, from 2000-year-old religious texts to music written just a few years ago that speaks to the times we live in\, today. The wide breadth of repertoire ranges from British Romantic composers Edward Elgar and Samuel Coleridge-Taylor\, to contemporary Americans Libby Larsen and David Lang\, to popular music icons Cole Porter\, Bob Dylan\, and Dolly Parton.\nAs human beings\, we interact with time in many different ways and on many different levels. The cyclical time of the passing seasons finds voice in Elgar’s passionate O Wild West Wind and Coleridge-Taylor’s luminous Song of Proserpine\, both settings of poems by Shelly. One of the most resolute depictions of recurring time is David Lang’s Again (After Ecclesiastes)\, whose music is based on a mesmerizing\, seemingly endless ostinato. Time as longing animates Argentinian composer Carlos Guastavino’s Ojos de tiempo (Eyes of Time) and Cole Porter’s Night and Day\, and time as eternity bookends Three Herrick Songs by Boston composer William Cutter.\nA special feature of the program is the world premiere of Ever by Minnesota composer\, Michael Ferguson\, a powerful setting of Shakespeare’s Sonnet XIX\, Devouring Time\, Blunt Thou the Lions Paws. Another recent work\, of particular relevance today\, is Minneapolis composer Libby Larsen’s Verdad/True\, a 2019 composition that uses texts by Chilean poet Gabriela Mistral to document the pain of migrants separated from their families\, who long for the time when they will be reunited.\nBob Dylan’s The Times They Are a-Changin’ hit a nerve in 1964\, and Adam Podd’s transcendent arrangement for choir and piano from 2021 testifies to the original song’s continuing relevance. The concert concludes with Dolly Parton’s upbeat anthem about the travails of working 9 to 5.\nTickets are $25 for adults / $5 students\, available in advance from www.wisconsinchamberchoir.org or at the door. Discounted tickets are available for children\, students\, and patrons experiencing financial hardship.\nFounded in 1998\, the Wisconsin Chamber Choir has established a reputation for excellence in the performance of oratorios by Bach\, Handel\, Mozart\, and Brahms; a cappella works from various centuries; and world premieres. WCC Artistic Director Robert Gehrenbeck\, a Professor of Music at UW-Whitewater\, has been hailed by critics for his vibrant and emotionally compelling interpretations of a wide variety of choral music. Under his leadership the WCC has presented major works with orchestra as well as innovative programs of rarely heard music by composers from a wide variety of eras\, nationalities\, and cultures.

SUMMARY:Brass Knuckles Quintet + Percussion at MBC Madison taproom
DESCRIPTION:The Brass Knuckles Quintet and Percussion formed in 2016 by the members of a similar ensemble\, Impact of Brass\, which discontinued with the retirement of that group’s leader and trumpeter\, Sandy LaClair. That group enjoyed much success with the model of adding a percussionist to a traditional brass quintet and Impact of Brass members Craig Mason (horn)\, Jim Latimer (drums)\, Norm Bakker (trumpet)\, and Alex Bauer (trombone) created the Brass Knuckles. \nThe unique formation of brass quintet and percussion allows the group to perform for a more diverse set of venues and audiences. The group enjoys being centered in Madison\, WI which hosts a rich music scene with many opportunities for performing a wide repertoire including both Mozart and Lady Gaga\, from barn weddings to large historic churches. The group also performs as a quintet without percussion\, or even as only a trio where appropriate. \nThe Brass Knuckles have been serving audiences all across southwestern Wisconsin from the Dells to up and down the Lake Michigan coast. They are a treat to see in parades\, both indoor and outdoor concerts\, and have featured as performers at Old World Wisconsin many years\, for Christmas and Halloween events.
