An Inside Look at Former Lands' End CEO Federica Marchionni

On the very day BRAVA Magazine’s October edition was on the press, then-Lands’ End CEO Federica Marchionni resigned from her post. Our profile of Marchionni’s vision for the Wisconsin retailer still ran in the magazine. We figured that despite having stepped down, Marchionni’s perspectives on being a rare female CEO and on life in general were still worth sharing with our readers. And so are her candid answers to BRAVA’s Insider questionnaire. –Marni McEntee

What fuels or feeds your happiness?
A hug from my son gives me the greatest joy.

What do you fear?
That the world will not evolve in the right direction.

What do you wish more people knew about you?
I care deeply about making a positive difference in the world and I believe in leading with purpose.

Your top advice for women wanting to climb to the C-suite:
Work on being more confident, believe in yourself and speak up when it comes to important issues and decisions.

The most important thing you hope to achieve in your lifetime:
I always want to make a positive difference and take action to make the world a better place, both personally and professionally.

Living a life without regret means:
Listen carefully to your intuition, challenge the idea with a rational approach and then make the best decision. Don’t look back, be grateful that you followed the path you chose.

Your most coveted fashion item:
A sheath dress

What keeps you awake at night?
While I end each day being grateful for what I have and what I have accomplished, I start to think about what needs to be achieved the next day and how to do my best.

What do you wish you had more time for?
My son and my interests.

Who do you most admire?
I most admire people who are larger than life; who want to achieve great change, such as Nelson Mandela, Aung San Suu Kyi, Elie Wiesel and The Pope.

What is your best personal attribute?
Passion for what I believe in.

What do you like to read?
Nonfiction and biographies

Favorite place to visit or vacation:
Italy!

Most blissful moment:
Running

Describe your personal style:
I am glad when people tell me that I have “Feminine elegance and sophistication.”
