In Style

By Mollie Shambeau

When I say ‘strapless bra,’ do you cringe a little? Do you curse yourself for buying even one piece of clothing that requires donning a slipping, sliding piece of armor you constantly have to adjust? Who doesn’t?

Thanks to gravity, a bra without straps is missing the key component that helps it function in our favor. And while I’m not here to offer a magic solution to something that defies gravity, I am here to dole out a few tips on making the best of this necessary evil, no matter your cup size.

A-cups

Strapless or not, any bra described as a “push-up” is key for smaller breasts—including the gel-padded variety shown here. Also, look for a bra with underwire, as added support keeps everything in an upright position and decreases opportunities for any slippage you might experience.

B-cups

A versatile option for any woman, bras with removable straps, such as the style shown here, still require a few key details. When you’re not sporting the straps, be sure that the bra offers non-slip lining as well as customized grades of lift. When you find the right fit, a B cup can lift just where you need it, while still offering support and coverage.

C-cups

Give yourself a boost! A bustier, while not ideal for everyone, is ready and able to support a C-cup (and above!) thanks to added coverage and support below the bust. Plus, a little tummy-tucking support and an added element of sex appeal will make you look and feel your best. Note: Bustiers can take a bit of getting used to. Be sure to find an option that lets you move and breathe easily.

D-cups

With larger cup sizes, pay attention to the details. Look for a bustier, a long-line bra—similar to, yet shorter than a full-length bustier—or a variety like the style shown here with a thick band. The thicker the band, the more support you’ll have. While underwire is also essential for a little lift, be sure that you don’t get too much of a lift! Find a bra in which the cups offer enough coverage to avoid overflow. Lastly, a bra with three or more hook-and-eye closures ensures you can find the right fit for your body.
